Collingwood President, Eddie McGuire has been condemned for suggesting Fairfax journalist, Caroline Wilson should be drowned at the next Big Freeze. The Big Freeze is an annual event that coincides with the Ice Bucket Challenge and raises money for Motor Neuron Disease research.Former St. Kilda coach, Danny Frawley made it worse by promising to hold Wilson down. McGuire has since apologised for the remarks.
This is a huge blow to McGuire and the AFL in general. It has undermined their White Ribbon campaigns and their efforts to be inclusive to Indigenous players, people of other wthnic origins, the LGBTQ+ community and women – at a time when a number of clubs now have female teams.
I’m not sure whether any further action should be taken. On one hand, I think Frawley, McGuire and Wayne Carey should be suspended from commentating. On the other hand, my thought is, let it off with a stern warning that any similar behaviour will have consequences – like suspension or permanent sacking. Should they all be suspended or sacked now?
Do you think the AFL should take further action and if so, what?
